Who Would Have Thought Curry Powder!!!

Yesterday my daughter and her family came over for Easter dinner. They had a busy day over at their other grandmother's where there are 30 kids in their family, as well at lots of good cooking. There's no telling what kind of chaos fun that was!

My house is a little more laid back, but fun. They can play in their playroom, ride their bikes, jump on the trampoline, color, or they can pose for a picture in front of a quilt. This is Brayden, Alexis, Gatlin, and Cameron. How in the world their mother gets them to all look at her when she is taking a picture is amazing to me. There's a better picture than this on her camera, but I forgot to upload it. In a little while, you see why I forgot!

When it comes to cooking dinner on holidays, we're not very traditional, except at Thanksgiving. Don't ask me why. Christmas dinner is seafood cajun style, since we are from Louisiana. Easter dinner was grilled turkey burgers, baked beans, and potato salad.

Now, the reason for my title.

Cameron, who is on the far right in the picture above, suffers from an extreme case of excema. He is allergic to eggs, wheat, soy, dairy, chicken, beef, peanuts, shellfish, grass, certain smells, and now curry powder. He is also affected by heat, stress, and so much more that we don't even know about. He has to be in a 67 degree environment because his skin is so sensitive.

Ever since we found out all the foods that Cameron is allergic to, we have educated ourselves about food preparations. For example, if we are having steak and he is having turkey burgers, we cook his food first, then we do ours. This is so no food of his is cross contaminated from our food. We can't take him out to eat at Texas Roadhouse anymore because of the peanut dust in the air. (Texas Roadhouse serves peanuts. People crack them open and throw the shells on the floor.)

Believe me when I say this was so hard at first. After 3 years of going to an allergy specialist, you get used to it and it becomes part of your life. We do everything we can possibly do to make his little world as comfortable as it can be.

For dinner Steve grilled turkey burgers. I told him that curry powder in the turkey burgers sounded great. We also had baked beans, which Cameron can have, and potato salad, which he can't have because of the mayonaisse.

Cameron was eating his turkey burger, and I noticed his face started getting red splotches. Then he started itching. Then his lips grew really big. Then Laura rushed him to the minor emergency center.

Steve and I were trying to figure out what could have happened, then it dawned on me curry powder! That was the only thing different we had done with the turkey burgers. So I got on the Internet, googled "allergic reactions to curry powder" and sure enough that's what it was. I called the emergency care center and told them.

After a shot, and a few minutes of observation, Cameron made it back to my house looking much better!

Take care!

Poor little Cameron with his allergies. I''m not surprise about curry. I'm not allergic to a lot... but curry I am. I still use it though, and I have no serious reaction like Cameron does. Glad to see he's much better!

    Happy Blogiversary Amanda!!!
